International Teaching Positions in The Sustainable City

A brand new school is opening in The Sustainable City (TSC), Dubai, the world’s first net-zero energy development, located at the intersection of Emirates Road (E611) and Al Qudra Road.  As of September 2018, Fairgreen International School is offering Pre-K to Grade 8, with the plan to add a grade each year until the school reaches Grade 12 by 2022.

The school’s unique location affords it many enriching opportunities and research partnerships. The website gulfnews.com highlights just a few of the Sustainable City’s brilliant features: eco-friendly, urban farming; a weather station that allows community members to gauge their energy use; low power consumption, thanks to solar panels, thick, insulated walls, and glazed windows; availability of Aqueous Ozone, a sustainable natural oxidizer, to be used in lieu of common household bleach; a community app that allows members to borrow from each other rather than consume and dispose in landfills; a power-generating gym in which the treadmill and cycling machines produce power; a sustainable mosque, fitted with LED lighting, capable of accommodating 700 worshippers while using minimal water and energy; and Boomerang bags, cloth shopping bags made by community members to be used and reused by community shoppers.

Fairgreen International School is a mission-driven school, designed with a culture of care for its students, faculty, and community members, and a curriculum dedicated to a future which is secure, ethical, and innovative. Fairgreen will deliver all four International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, with a focus on sustainability infused throughout the curriculum. Students at Fairgreen will not only learn to reuse, reduce, and recycle, but they will also understand the science of sustainability and become passionate advocates for our environment. Strong arts and athletics programs, with an emphasis on healthy, active living, will also be key features of the school.

As a city, Dubai offers something for everyone. There is so much to explore, from the stunning and vibrant city itself to the unique beauty of the United Arab Emirates’ desert landscape. Dubai is also one of the world's great transit hubs—a gateway to all corners of the world. Because Dubai is a dynamic, global hub where people of many nationalities come together to live, learn, and work, the Fairgreen International School community will be truly international. The student population, faculty, and entire community will value, support and celebrate all cultures and share in so many diverse experiences as they learn from one another.

At present, 245 K–8 students of 50 nationalities are enrolled. Half of them are from North America and the U.K., and 10% are from Dubai. The teaching staff of 27 comprises 23 from North America and the U.K. and four from Dubai. The IB candidate school will offer the U.K. Early Years along with the IB Primary and Middle Years Programmes. Fairgreen also holds candidate status with the Council of International Schools and Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA).

Fairgreen International School is interested hiring certified singles and married couples with IB certification. They will consider couples with a non-teaching spouse. A minimum of two years teaching experience at an accredited UK, Australian/NZ, Canadian, or U.S. institution is required. Candidates must hold an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. There is no age limit to obtain a work visa in Dubai. The school seeks teachers who will bring enthusiasm, an interest in leading extra-curricular activities, and a desire to contribute to an open and collaborative school culture. Head of School Graeme Scott explains,

"There is nothing as energizing as building a new school from the ground up. Perhaps one of the most exciting elements of this process is putting together the teaching and support team. At Fairgreen, we are not only looking for experience, expertise, content knowledge and great pedagogy—we are also looking for culture-builders, collaborators, and warm, caring human beings. We believe working at Fairgreen will be an amazing learning experience.”

The benefits package includes a salary not subject to tax, a moving and housing allowance, and one annual round-trip airfare home. Each working teacher is awarded 100% tuition benefit per child; a single teacher with two children would therefore receive a 50% benefit for each. Comprehensive professional development will be offered in-house, but financial support is available for external professional development courses as well. Worldwide health insurance, including long-term disability, is fully covered. This package offers a great opportunity for savings.
