The International Community School (ICS) of Addis Ababa
Ethiopia
seeks a new
Head of School
-- effective July 2017 --
The International Community School (ICS) of Addis Ababa is a premier early childhood through grade 12 school offering a holistic, vigorous and inclusive program. An International Baccalaureate Diploma school, accredited in the United States, ICS serves a diverse, multi-cultural student body on a beautiful, well-equipped campus.
Our Mission
We nurture the talents, character and intellect of all learners, challenging them to be a positive influence and empowering them to excel in their world.
Vision
Our vision for learning at ICS includes:
• engaging learning experiences through inquiry and reflection;
• a broad range of local, global and virtual opportunities;
• innovative and flexible use of resources.
Our History
In April 1964, the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, by royal decree, allowed the American Community School to be established. The Emperor gave the school a 50 year lease on 15 acres of land on the far undeveloped side of Addis Ababa. Our doors opened with three classroom blocks, a small library and an outdoor amphitheater. We had 20 teachers, 363 students in KG- grade 12 and a lot of hope, promise and potential. Today, with our goal of reaching 1200 students, the International Community School is a premier early childhood through grade 12 school.
Our Growth
Student enrollment at ICS has doubled in size since 2007. In the last couple of years, our enrollment growth has slowed to a 2% increase due to many of our grades levels have reached our capacity. As such, we are under-going an aggressive campus Master Plan that will expand and innovate our campus to continue to grow and accommodate 1200 students. In 2014 we completed a new high capacity cafeteria and in 2017 we will complete a new classroom block with 29 classrooms, administrative offices, indoor theater and assembly space with rooftop gardens. This is just the first of 6 modules to improve and expand our campus and growing enrollment.
Our Curriculum
We are a PYP candidate school and offer the IBD Program for grades 11 and 12. Our instruction is based on a US curriculum, utilizing Everyday Math and the ISSs programs.

Living in Addis and Ethiopia
If you ask any expat here what’s it like to live in Addis you will get a range of answers, anything from “the weather”, “the food”, “the people”, to “the security”, “the amazing sites around the country”, “the exciting changes in Addis”. Whatever the reason, the key is that there are many reasons to enjoy living and working in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is a developing country and with all developing countries there are some challenges to day to day living. However, the community at ICS is very special and unique, and there’s a sense of “we are in this together”. While there are challenges, it is an exciting time to be here.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) ranks Ethiopia as among the five fastest growing economies in the world. After a decade of continuous expansion (during which real GDP growth averaged 10.8% per annum), in 2013/14 the economy grew for its 11th consecutive year posting 10.3% growth.
