Mission
Surabaya Intercultural School (SIS) offers an academically rigorous curriculum within a dynamic learning community where students are engaged, enlightened, and empowered to be creative and collaborative global leaders.
SIS is home to students who represent over 25 nationalities. The students experience a vibrant international mindset every day and show appreciation for other cultures. Our support for each individual and our learning culture make it easy for students coming in from, or going out to, other educational systems.
Core Learning Outcomes
Our philosophy is rooted in our school’s Core Learning Outcome. SIS prepares students to be Balanced Individuals, Enlightened Thinkers, Engaged Communicators, and Empowered Global Citizens.
History
Surabaya Intercultural School first opened its doors under the sponsorship of the American Consulate in 1971. Its goal was to provide students with an opportunity to acquire an internationally based education. It began its operation with just 24 students. As the school grew, it moved in 1995 to the present campus, a site of 50,000 sq. meters located in Citra Raya, a self-contained city development in West Surabaya.
Surabaya Intercultural School is the only school in Surabaya accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), one of six regional associations that accredit public and private schools, colleges, and universities in the United States. First accredited by WASC in 1985, SIS continues to pursue excellence in international education. The self-study and accreditation visits provide opportunities for our school community to reflect upon current practice and develop a plan to continue to move forward.
In the spring of 2012, SIS received authorization from the International Baccalaureate (IB) to offer the IB Primary Years Program for our elementary (EC 3 – Grade 5) students. For highly motivated high school students, SIS offers the competitive College Board Advanced Placement (AP) program, culminating with the opportunity for students to earn the AP Capstone Diploma.
Currently, SIS consists of Indonesian and international student populations from more than 25 countries. With both student body and faculty composed of a variety of cultures from around the globe, SIS seeks to provide an environment which fosters respect for, and appreciation of different cultures, including that of its host country, Indonesia.
