The International School of Stavanger is looking for an exceptional leader to be our Middle and High School Principal.  The position will suit someone with the skills, qualifications and experience of leading international schools where a vision for the future can be blended with an appreciation of the traditions and culture of an established school.

Position Overview

The Middle School and High School Principal at the International School of Stavanger is a visionary leader who integrates academic and pastoral oversight to foster a dynamic and inclusive learning environment. This is a new role which is pivotal in shaping the educational journey of our students from Grades 6-12, overseeing both the Middle School and High School sections, including oversight of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and IGCSE examinations. The MS/HS Principal is a key member of the leadership team, contributing to the strategic direction of the entire school while ensuring that all activities support meaningful learning experiences.

 

Core Responsibilities

Compelling Communicator

Change Management: Take a proactive approach to leading and supporting staff through change processes. 

Leadership and Staff Development: Lead, mentor, and inspire Middle and High School staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration. Ensure open and effective communication channels within the team, encouraging professional growth aligned with the school’s mission.

Community Engagement: Act as the primary spokesperson for the Middle and High School, representing the school in parent meetings, open houses, and community events. Engage with various stakeholders, including parents, students, and external partners, to promote the school’s values and objectives.

Collaboration: Work closely with the MS and HS Coordinator and to ensure oversight of the IBDP and IGCSE programmes, ensuring that all academic and regulatory requirements are met.

Contributing Global Citizen

Ethical Leadership: Model integrity and responsibility, promoting these values across the school community. Encourage students and staff to recognise their role as global citizens and the impact of their actions on the world around them.

Inclusivity: Ensure that the school’s programmes and activities reflect a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Support initiatives that broaden students’ global perspectives and foster a deep respect for cultural differences.

Creative Problem Solver

Innovative Leadership: Drive the continuous improvement of teaching and learning by encouraging creative approaches to problem-solving. Collaborate with the faculty and leadership team to explore new methodologies, tools, and strategies that enhance learning impact.

Resource Management: Oversee the effective management of budgets for the Middle and High School sections, ensuring that resources are allocated to support innovative teaching practices and student learning experiences.

Respectful Relationship Builder

Student Wellbeing: Partner with school counsellors to ensure the pastoral care and wellbeing of all students. Foster a supportive environment where students feel safe, valued, and seen.

Community Building: Cultivate strong relationships within the school community, encouraging collaboration among students, staff, and parents. Promote a culture of empathy, kindness, and mutual respect, ensuring that every member of the community feels connected and valued.

Innovative Creator

Curriculum Engagement: Actively engage with the school’s curriculum development, working alongside the Director of Learning and Teaching to ensure that it reflects innovative and forward-thinking approaches to education. Encourage staff to balance proven successful strategies with opportunities to be experimental in their teaching, always seeking to connect concepts in impactful and meaningful ways.

Strategic Vision: Contribute to the strategic direction of the school, bringing a creative and visionary approach to leadership that inspires others to think beyond traditional boundaries.

Determined Individual

Resilience and Growth: Demonstrate and promote resilience, grit, and determination, both personally and within the school community. 

Take a proactive and focused approach to critical issues such as regulatory compliance, examinations and college applications.

Support students and staff in overcoming challenges, learning from setbacks, and maintaining a growth mindset.

Autonomous Leadership: Balance collaborative leadership with the ability to make decisive, autonomous decisions when necessary, always with the best interests of students and staff in mind.

Key Qualifications

Educational Leadership Experience: Proven track record in educational leadership, ideally within an international school setting, with experience overseeing Middle and High School levels.

Qualification: Relevant qualification in school leadership, Principal training etc.

IB and IGCSE Knowledge: Deep understanding of the IB Diploma Programme and preferably also IGCSE examinations, with experience in programme oversight and collaboration with coordinators.

Strategic Vision: Demonstrated ability to contribute to the strategic direction of a school, with a focus on innovative and impactful learning experiences.

Communication Skills: Exceptional communication skills, capable of engaging a diverse range of audiences and fostering trust within the school community.

Cultural Competence: A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with the ability to lead a culturally diverse school community.
