On behalf of Nigel Winnard, incoming Head of School at the American School of Rio de Janeiro (EARJ) and the EARJ Search Committee, we are pleased to announce that following an extensive international search, which attracted many excellent candidates, Mr. Nate Swenson has been appointed Lower School Principal and Mr. Jamie Robb has been appointed Middle and Upper School Principal, effective August 2017.
Nate brings to the position extensive international and US experience in teaching and leadership, including as an elementary principal in Minnesota public schools, middle school principal in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and currently as elementary principal at the Busan International Foreign School, Korea. A wide range of teaching roles in elementary classrooms and as a technology coordinator and integrationist have provided Nate with a strong understanding of the learning process. A keen proponent of professional development and inclusive leadership, Nate has participated in recent trainings with Adaptive Schools, Responsive Classroom, Response to Intervention, and the PYP and MYP.
He earned a B.A. from Gustavus Aldophus College and his MA and Principal Licensure from St. Marys University, Minneapolis, where he has also been an adjunct professor. Nate and his wife, Amy, an elementary teacher, will be joined in Rio by their daughter, a high school student.
Mr. Robb is currently Secondary School Principal of the Busan International Foreign School in Busan, Korea. Prior to his current position, he was High School Principal at the American International School in Kuwait. He has also held several teaching and administrative positions in Canada prior to his positions overseas.
Mr. Robb earned a B.A. in Physical and Health Education from the University of Western Ontario, and a Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Toronto. He also has a Specialist in Special Education from the University of Toronto.
We extend our good wishes to Nate and Jamie and, on behalf of the American School of Rio community thank all candidates who expressed an interest in these positions and everyone who has assisted and supported the search process.

The American School of Rio de Janeiro (EARJ) has appointed Search Associates as consultant in the Middle / Upper School Principal search with Ralph Jahr being the lead consultant. The deadline for applications is April 3, 2017. Candidates are asked to submit a letter of interest and the requested materials as early as possible as the Search Committee reserves the right to close the selection process at any time if the right candidate is found. The review of files will begin as soon as applications are received. Skype video interviews of selected candidates will take place on a rolling basis and can be scheduled at any time after applications have been received. The new MS/US Principal will be selected immediately after Skype interviews of the finalist candidates have been completed. Current plans are to have the new Principal identified prior to the end of April 2017.
Candidates should send the information listed below as a single pdf file attached to an email:
- A letter of application describing your interest in the Middle / Upper School Principal position at the American School of Rio de Janeiro (EARJ), listing your strengths as a candidate and how your qualifications and experience align with the profile of the desired candidate.
- A current resumé not to exceed two pages
