BFIS in Barcelona

Benjamin Franklin International School (BFIS) is in the heart of Barcelona and is a truly international community. The K-12 school has 700 students from over 50 nationalities  but has a strong American influence. Located on three city blocks, each of the school buildings has its own unique charm. One is a brand new, state of the art, elementary school. BFIS is a very short distance from numerous beautiful beaches, the Pyrenees Mountains, and many countries in the heart of Europe. Travel opportunities are endless. The culture and food in Barcelona is second to none in the world; the local community is welcoming, and the city is vibrant. Most people who land in Barcelona never want to leave!

BFIS was established in 1986 and is accredited by both the Middle States Association (MSA) and the Ministry of Education in Spain. All students have the option to work towards the American High School Diploma, the Spanish Baccalaureate Certificate, and/or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. Nearly one-third of the students are Spanish, and 28% are from the U.K. and North America. The teaching staff of 123 includes 62 from North America and the U.K., and 25 from Spain.

BFIS will consider hiring married teaching couples and single teachers with up to two dependents. Also welcome to apply are interns without dependents, unmarried teaching couples, and married couples with a non-teaching spouse. The school is also interested in the applications of outstanding experienced teachers holding certification/qualification from a non-English speaking country. While there is no age limit to acquire a work visa in Spain, teachers must be certified, experienced, and have their academic degree in the subject that they will be teaching in order to obtain one.

BFIS’s salary and generous benefits package allows for savings. Teachers receive a one-time moving and settling-in allowance as well as round-trip airfare. Local health insurance is fully covered by the school, with the option of purchasing worldwide health coverage for 42 euros per month. Bonuses are awarded after the second, fourth, and fifth years of teaching, and all employees receive free school lunch as well as discounts on school trips and activities for their children. Finally, all teachers receive an annual stipend for professional development.
