British-Style Overseas Teaching at Bilingual Boarding School in Hangzhou

Wycombe Abbey School, Hangzhou, one of three Wycombe Abbey Schools in mainland China, is a bilingual K-12 co-educational British-style boarding school established in 2021. The school was established by the Wycombe Abbey Education group who also have a branch in Hong Kong. The mother school Wycombe Abbey, founded in 1896 in Buckinghamshire, England, is an independent girls' boarding and day school with an excellent reputation.

Wycombe Abbey, Hangzhou sits about 30 minutes from the center of Hangzhou, one of the ancient capitals of China and a commercial and cultural center since the 6th Century CE. Famous for its silk industry and tourist attraction West Lake, the city is now a bustling tech hub and home to the headquarters of Alibaba.

Hangzhou lies in the economically developed Yangtze- Delta region of China, attracting talent from diverse industries. Cosmopolitan and forward-looking, China’s fourth largest city boasts a population of about 10 million. The 19th Asian Games took place in Hangzhou in September 2023. Wycombe Abbey School, Hangzhou benefits from its unique location in the urban suburb of Hangzhou City, 45 minutes’ drive towards the world-famous heritage site West Lake.

The school comprises four joint building blocks, Lower School, Upper School, Sports Center, and Creative & Performing Arts Center, as well as an independent kindergarten site, a lake, and seven House Buildings for boarders. The campus lies adjacent to picturesque Xiannu (fairy) lake with a backdrop of beautiful green hills. The campus has also integrated elements of local history and culture to become a unique landmark in Xiaoshan district.

An accredited member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS) and member of the Boarding Schools’ Association, Wycombe Abbey School currently enrolls around 600 pupils, most of whom are Chinese. Kindergarten students follow the Early Years Foundation curriculum. From Year 2 through to Year 10, the children take an integrated curriculum before moving on to the IGCSE and A Levels in the 6th Form. About 60% of the teaching staff are from China.

The school offers more than 60 extra-curricular activities (ECA), including sports, music, arts, and more, appealing to every interest.

Wycombe Abbey hires experienced, single teachers and would consider couples—including those with a non-teaching partner—experienced teachers without certification, and interns wishing to experience overseas teaching. As per government regulations, those up to the age of 60 may obtain a work visa.
