Great Opportunities at the International School of Macao

You can now count the International School of Macao (TIS) among Search Associates' first-class schools. The region of Macao, west of Hong Kong, includes the Macao Peninsula and the small islands of Taipa and Coloane, all connected by either bridge or causeway. Located on the Taipa Island, the school is within walking distance to the residential and shopping districts of Taipa. Everything in Macao — also called Macau — is accessible within 20 minutes by taxi.

Established in 2002 and accredited by the Ministry of Education in Alberta, TIS provides a Canadian curriculum to 1,148 K-12 students of 44 nationalities. Of these, 40% of the students are Chinese, while 18% are from North America and the U.K. High school students can earn an Alberta High School Diploma and have the option of taking A.P. classes. The teaching staff of 111 includes 11 from North America and the U.K, in addition to 15 from China.

TIS Boarding offers co-educational facilities with single sex rooms within the residence for boys and girls. Teachers do not board with the students. Plans are underway for the construction of a new building on campus, which will include specially-designed features for both the kindergarten and high school communities.

TIS prefers teachers with Alberta training and experience, although the school will also consider those whose qualifications are equivalent. The school favors married teaching couples without dependents but also accepts applications of singles and candidates with dependents. TIS will also consider outstanding, newly-certified teachers with limited experience. While there is no age limit for a work visa, teachers must be certified to gain one, and Macao has strict visa regulations that the school must follow.

The salary and benefits package offers a wonderful opportunity for savings. Along with an excellent salary, TIS provides generous roundtrip airfare tickets every two years and a housing allowance of $750.00. Teachers are covered under local and major medical health, as well as dental and life insurance. The school has a retirement plan to which it contributes 1%, annually, and its Professional Development Fund budgets $626.00 per teacher per year.
