Honoring the Legacy of John Magagna

Dear Search Associates Community,

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of my father, John Magagna, founder of Search Associates. His loss is a profound one for the Magagna family, for Search Associates, and for the entire international education community. My father was not only an exceptional educator and leader, but also a visionary who dedicated his life to advancing global education.

John’s career in education began over 60 years ago when he started as a math teacher at Wyoming Seminary Day School, the very school that transformed his life as a young student at the age of 16. It was at SEM where he encountered inspiring teachers who not only guided and supported him but also ignited his passion for education. This formative experience set him on a lifelong path to ensure that schools around the world would have access to exceptional educators who could shape the lives of students, just as his teachers had done for him.

From there, he went on to hold headships in Tangier, Morocco; Tehran, Iran; and Jakarta, Indonesia, as well as at private schools in the United States. His love for teaching and his desire to give back to the communities that shaped him were always at the forefront of his career. He started Search Associates because of his passion for finding the best teachers and leaders for international schools around the world. He often referred to it as his “calling.” For the last 30 years, he poured his heart into this organization, building it into a respected and trusted partner for educators and schools globally.

His impact in international education goes far beyond his personal achievements. His vision, drive, and unwavering dedication are woven into the fabric of Search Associates. Under his leadership, the organization grew into a global network, helping thousands of educators and schools find one another and thrive. His legacy extends far beyond our family—it is shared by everyone who has been touched by his work, whether as a teacher, leader, school, colleague, or student.

John lived an extraordinary life—a true force of nature who embraced every moment fully. Even at 90, he was deeply engaged in the organization he built, living with purpose and enthusiasm right up until the end. His zest for life, love for education, and commitment to the international community were unmatched.

As his daughter and CEO, I want to assure you that I will do everything in my power to ensure his legacy continues. Search Associates will always live up to the high expectations, mission, and values he set for us. This organization was more than a business to him—it was a way to connect people, build a community, and create opportunities for educators and schools around the world.

On behalf of all of us at Search Associates, we celebrate his remarkable contributions and are committed to honoring his legacy by carrying his spirit forward in everything we do. Thank you for being part of his journey and for your support and kindness during this difficult time.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Jessica Magagna, CEO
