International Teaching at Taipei’s Historic Fuhsing Private School

Join a prestigious and historical international institution in Taiwan’s capital city, Taipei Fuhsing Private School (Fuhsing), a renowned K–12 private school celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2025. The name "Fuhsing" loosely translates to "reviving culture," a fitting tribute to the school’s deep commitment to preserving tradition while embracing a global outlook.

For decades, Fuhsing focused on cultivating honorable and educated Taiwanese citizens. However, since the launch of its bilingual international program in 2007, the school’s mission has evolved to emphasize global citizenship. Fuhsing offers one of the few opportunities in Taiwan for international teachers to work as full-time subject specialists within the heart of Taipei. Students graduate equipped with the knowledge and skills acquired from their international teachers, ready to make a mark on the world while staying true to their Taiwanese roots.

Taiwan is known for its surprising environmental diversity, with a mountain range the length of its subtropical island. From hiking and diving to its famous food culture, Taiwan offers an exciting mix of urban and pastoral experiences. Taipei, the capital city, combines cosmopolitan living with easy access to nature, thanks to its highly developed rail systems.

Fuhsing is ideally situated near the metro and city center, allowing international teachers to enjoy the best of both worlds—easy access to vibrant urban life and the natural beauty of Taiwan. Teachers who find the most fulfillment at Fuhsing are those who immerse themselves in Taiwanese culture and work closely with their dedicated colleagues. Associate Principal Charlie McAlpin adds,

As an urban school we do trade size for convenience, but our rebuilt campus incorporates plant life throughout its design to keep students connected to Taiwan's natural beauty.

Accredited by the Taiwan Ministry of Education, Fuhsing delivers a bilingual curriculum that combines the U.S. Common Core with Advanced Placement courses. Currently, over 3,500 students are enrolled, most of whom are Taiwanese, and approximately 90% of the teaching staff are Taiwanese as well.

For the past 80 years, Fuhsing has built a strong reputation for both academic excellence and personal development. Students are expected to take their studies seriously, but they also participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities. Moreover, students regularly travel the world to participate in musical, athletic, and intellectual competitions, further enhancing their education.

At Fuhsing, those teaching abroad primarily teach English or science in elementary school and English, science, or social studies in secondary school. Other subjects are taught by Taiwanese teachers, either in Chinese or bilingually. The school notes,

We are a growing program and value teachers who are looking to grow in their profession and help build a positive community.

Fuhsing seeks experienced teachers of diverse profiles, including couples with non-teaching partners and seasoned teachers without certification. While experienced candidates up to the age of 64 may obtain a work visa, due to government regulations, candidates without a teaching license can only be considered if they hold a Taiwanese passport, permanent Taiwanese residency, or are married to a Taiwanese citizen.

Teachers at Fuhsing often cite their classroom autonomy and the strong relationship they build with students and colleagues as some of the main reasons they stay at the school. The close-knit, supportive community fosters collaboration, with all teacher offices located in one corner of the school! As Mr. McAlpin says,

While teaching in a foreign educational culture always presents challenges, we address and overcome those challenges together.

Fuhsing offers an attractive overseas teaching benefits package, which includes allowances for settling in, housing, and annual airfare. While Taiwanese citizens and spouses of citizens are automatically enrolled in a national pension plan at a 6% rate, international teachers who do not qualify for this plan are offered a similar pension scheme. Additionally, Fuhsing provides $1,000 per year in professional development reimbursement funds for each teacher, and subject heads organize professional development opportunities within their teams.

All teachers are covered by Taiwan's world-class universal health insurance system, which is inexpensive and comprehensive, including dental coverage; however, employees are responsible for a percentage of the cost.

Teachers become eligible for tuition remission after completing two contract years, although spots for children above kindergarten age are limited due to low turnover. The school advises teachers to discuss their childcare needs during the interview process for clarity on this important matter.
