International Teaching Vacancies in East Java

Surabaya European School (SES) is a small international school of approximately 160 students ages 3–16 on the western side of the vibrant city of Surabaya, East Java. SES is the only school in Surabaya to offer a Montessori education for ages 3–5, followed by a combined international and British national curriculum leading to both the Cambridge Key Stage 3 and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education for secondary students. After school sessions for secondary students include preparation classes for the Maths IGCSE and Indonesian exams as well as robotics or religion classes.

Located in a suburban golf and family club, SES has well-appointed classrooms, two information and communications technology rooms, a science laboratory, a music room, an art room, an indoor gymnasium, a school field, and a swimming pool. This K–12 day school is fully accredited by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. Its teaching staff of 22 includes 9 Indonesians and 9 teachers from North America and the U.K.

Wellness at SES is supported by classes in yoga, fitness training, meditation, nutrition education, and a range of sports. The swimming program extends from basic water safety for the youngest students to training for inter-school competitions for the older students. Though varying from semester to semester, based on student interest, after-school sports offerings include basketball, football, golf, rugby, badminton, cricket, golf, tee ball, gymnastics, table tennis, and futsal (indoor soccer).

To supplement drama classes, SES offers students many choices to engage in the performing arts, through Film Club, talent shows, and an annual school production. The school also offers a range of extra-curricular art activities for students to explore and develop in both digital and traditional mediums. In the past two years, the school has offered photography, Secondary Magazine, graphic art, fine art, crochet, and watercolor painting. Students can also delve into music and dance after school.

Excursions and trips allow SES students to interact with other cultures and environments both domestically and internationally. In addition to the annual Secondary School Trip and numerous primary school excursions, students can take trips and excursions involved with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and Model United Nations (MUN). Also known as The International Award for Young People, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, is the world’s leading youth achievement award, and is available to SES students ages 14 and up. Teachers at SES mentor and help students taking the personal challenge of completing different levels of the award.

Students at SES have many opportunities for both personal growth and for giving back to the community. With support from the school, students engage in individual, local community service projects. Many of the projects run hand-in-hand with SES’s environmental awareness program. Additionally, SES students continually fundraise for and help out at a local childhood leukemia ward.

SES is interested in hiring certified and experienced singles and married couples, including those with a non-teaching spouse. Candidates must hold their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. Certified teachers up to the age of 60 may obtain a work visa.

Benefits include furnished apartments with paid utilities, a moving allowance, and annual airfare home at the start and end of each contract. Along with providing professional development for staff, SES covers full tuition for up to two dependents of teaching couples. This does not include fees for uniforms, exams, and after-school activities. SES offers each teacher $1,100 USD per year for the purpose of obtaining their own insurance. Because of the low cost of living, the SES package is a chance for excellent savings. Alternatively, a family of four could live on one salary.
