Search Associates is excited to say aloha to Kamehameha Schools (KS), a group of three schools located on three islands of Hawaii state: Hawaii, Maui, and Oahu. The organization was founded in 1887 by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the great-granddaughter of Kamehameha I, with the mission “to create educational opportunities in perpetuity, to improve the capabilities and well-being of people of Hawaiian ancestry.” Managing Director of Ho’olaukoa JoAnn Wong-Kam says of the school today,
“The beauty of our island home draws many to move here to enjoy our tropical climate and many outdoor venues from water sports to mountain hiking. The rich history of Hawaii also brings a deep cultural connection to those who become residents.”
Having recently celebrated its 130th anniversary, KS wishes to develop its educational approach to reflect 21stcentury learning needs while maintaining its strong foundation in Hawaiian culture. Within the next 25 years, KS hopes to realize its vision of a thriving lahui (nation) where its learners achieve postsecondary educational success, enabling good life and career choices. KS also envisions that its learners will be grounded in Christian and Hawaiian values and that they will become leaders who will contribute to their communities, both locally and globally.
Three campuses are included in Kamehameha Schools (KS). All are fully accredited by the Western Association for Schools and Colleges. Candidates looking to work for KS must be American citizens with academic degrees in the subject they will be teaching. All three schools provide local health insurance, including life, dental, and long-term disability, with the employee paying a percentage. As for retirement benefits, in addition to the 100% employer match for up to 6% of pay, KS will also make annual employer contributions for eligible participants of up to 4% of eligible pay. There is no age limit to obtain a work visa in Hawaii. Additional benefits include the flight to Hawaii, a moving allowance, and professional development, as well as a competitive salary.
The largest K–12 campus, KSBE, is located in Kapalama, on the island of Oahu. This 600-acre hillside campus has nearly 3,200 students and a teaching staff of 500. In addition to 70 buildings, the campus includes an Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis courts, a new athletic complex with a football/soccer field and track, and an auditorium which seats 3,000. SKBE uses an inquiry-based learning approach and culminates with opportunities for students to take Advanced Placement (AP) classes in high school. The boarding program is designed to help students attain not only high academic performance, but also positive self-esteem that comes with personal and community responsibility. KSBE is interested in hiring experienced and certified singles and teaching couples.
Located in Pukalani on the island of Maui, KSM is a K–12 day school, staffing 125 teachers for its 1,060 students. The well-equipped campus covers 180 acres. Established in 1996, KSM delivers the U.S. Common Core Curriculum and the AP. KSM’s curriculum includes the study of Hawaiian culture and language as well as character education and religious instruction. The school is interested in hiring single teachers but would consider couples as well as outstanding newly-certified teachers and experienced teachers lacking teaching certification.
KSH in Kea’au on the island of Hawaii is a K–12 day school with 125 teachers and 1,180 students. The school, also established in 1996, sits on a 300-acre campus in a remote, heavily forested, and beautiful area, eight miles south of Hilo. KSH’s overall program is college preparatory. The website also describes a career academy program for upper level students, which offers skill development and career orientation in Arts and Communication, Business and Leadership, Engineering and Design, Health and Wellness, and Science and Natural Resources. The school is interested in hiring certified, experienced singles and couples and would consider those with a non-teaching spouse.
