Overseas Teaching Opportunities in Qingdao

Pegasus California International High School (pcschina) is a unique boarding school located in Qingdao, China. The high school, which opened in September 2016, currently delivers the U.S. Common Core curriculum to 144 mostly Chinese students in Grades 9–12. Instruction is delivered solely in English by teachers credentialed in American universities. Students at the secondary level many choose from an assortment of Advanced Placement courses.

Pcschina is in the process of applying for accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The current teaching staff of 28 comprises 20 from North America and 8 from China. Graduates of pcschina receive a high school diploma from a California school district. The Principal and Chairman, David Long, Ph.D., former California Secretary of Education, personally interviews and hires all teachers. Dr. Long, who served under Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, just announced,

“Pegasus will have its first graduating class in June 2019. The Pegasus family is extremely proud of our students as the acceptances they have received in the early decision releases are outstanding!  Our students have already been accepted to Vanderbilt, Rutgers (4), Michigan, University of Edinburgh, Illinois (4), Penn State, Kings College, Indiana, and Michigan State to name a few. The University of California system and others will be releasing in the next four weeks.”

Qingdao, which means Green Island, is a modern city that has preserved some of its past. Some wonderful aspects of the city are the Han Dynasty Brick Museum, with its 5,000 relics, and the central Zhongshan Park, where lively festivals are held in the spring and summer among its lakes, gardens, and walking paths. Also within the park are Qingdao’s largest temple and an active Buddhist sanctuary. Lonely planet describes the city:

“Combining fresh sea air and dashing good looks . . . [Qingdao’s] winding cobbled streets, historic German architecture and red-capped hillside villas are captivating and there's so much to enjoy in the city’s diverse food scene, headlined by the ubiquitous home town beer Tsingtao. Meanwhile, the seaside aspect keeps the town cooler than the inland swelter zones during summer and slightly warmer in winter.”

Pcschina is interested in hiring U.S.-certified singles, interns, and couples, including those with a non-teaching partner, as well as outstanding newly-certified teachers. Candidates must hold their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. Certified teachers up to the age of 59 may obtain a work visa.

The excellent benefits package includes a competitive salary, a furnished apartment with utilities covered, a moving allowance, and one annual roundtrip airfare. The school contributes 6% to a retirement plan and 90% tuition for all children of high school age. Teachers also receive a meal allowance at the school cafeteria. Professional development is provided during the school year and during the summer in the U.S. Local health insurance, including dental and emergency evacuations, is fully covered. There are local employment opportunities for non-teaching partners. The opportunity for savings is tremendous!
