Wellington College Hangzhou plans to provide a world-class K–12 bilingual education. Currently enrolled are 376, mostly Chinese, K–8 students, with 10% from the U.K. The school follows the local Zhejiang curriculum framework along with both the complete British and International Baccalaureate Programs. The teaching staff of 100 includes 40 from North America and the U.K.
Within the immersive English learning environment, students will also be engrossed in the Wellington identity, values, and ethos. Wellington Aptitudes, derived from the work of Howard Gardner at Harvard University, focus on the holistic growth and well-being of the student. The eight aspects include linguistics; reasoning; social skills; personal, cultural, spiritual, and moral understanding; and finally, physical health.
Bilingualism at Wellington College Hangzhou means a 50/50 percent exposure to English and Chinese. Not only does the school aim for students to achieve seamless transition between the two languages in reading, writing, and understanding, it also aims for students to make intercultural and linguistic transitions in all contexts: study, business, and leisure. Wellington College Hangzhou prefers to hire single teachers and teaching interns. However, they will consider couples—including those with a non-teaching spouse—and outstanding newly-certified teachers. Candidates must possess an academic degree in the subject they will be teaching as well as certification from an English-speaking country. Certified teachers under the age of 55 may obtain a work visa.
