The New St. Johnsbury Academy Jeju

On the stunning island of Jeju, South Korea, amid beautiful beaches, hiking trails, and cultural sites, a new school was launched in the fall of 2017: St. Johnsbury Academy Jeju (SJA Jeju). Jeju Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the Global Education City, a world-class 900-acre educational zone with international schools as well as residential, commercial, and entertainment facilities. The school's campus is part of the Global Education City and rests in an especially picturesque location: in a volcanic forest surrounded by mountains and tea farms, near the city of Seogwipo in the southwest of Jeju Island. SJA Jeju is the fourth international school to open on Jeju Island, and Search Associates is pleased to announce that the school has joined its line-up of premier schools.

SJA Jeju is a K-12 boarding school, which follows the rigorous curriculum of its home school, St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont, a distinguished independent boarding school that has been serving local and international students since 1874. With 50 of its 69 total teaching staff from North America, SJA Jeju will follow a largely U.S.-based curriculum, which will comprise the U.S. Common Core and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, in addition to the Reggio Emilia Approach and Inquiry-Based Learning. SJA Jeju currently holds candidate status with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). At present, 453 K–12 students–80% Korean and 5% North American–are enrolled.

The family-friendly SJA Jeju is hiring certified single and married teachers with or without dependents. A teaching couple may bring three or more children, and a single teacher may bring up to two. Unmarried teaching couples may also apply. The school will consider exceptional newly-certified teachers and interns but requires all certified candidates to have their academic degree in the subject in which they will be teaching. Teachers up to the age of 62 may obtain a work visa.

A contract with SJA Jeju makes substantial savings possible. The salary and benefits package includes fully-furnished, on-campus housing (commensurate to family size), a one-time moving allowance, and one round-trip economy flight every year, per family. After year two, the school will pay 50% of a teacher's local taxes. At the conclusion of a teacher's contract, SJA Jeju awards one month's severance pay for every year worked. Worldwide health insurance is covered, including emergency evacuation and long-term disability. In addition, tuition for teachers' children and professional development opportunities are fully funded. Other perks include free school lunch and the opportunity to take Korean language courses.
